BMW Compact FWD Sedan Accurately Rendered Based on Preview Concept

BMW is going to launch a front-wheel drive sedan that’s about the size of the original 3 Series, probably within a year. A preview design study has been presented at the 2015 Guangzhou Motor Show in China, and we presume that means it will be built there as well.

Supposedly tailored exclusively to the Chinese market, the Compact Sedan Concept has been seen testing in production form in places like Germany and Sweden. That and the recent barrage of minivans they gave us means Europe and even America are going to get this car.

But what will it look like? Fortunately, BMW designers are conservative, and they never stray too far from what the real car will look like. Examples like the X4 or the i8 are a good testament to that.

So to make the 1 Series into an awful production reality, X-Tomi design only had to play with trim pieces, the mirrors and the size of the wheels. All things considered, it certainly looks just as interesting as an Audi A3 or Mercedes CLA-Class. Models like this prove that there is a disconnect between what auto journalists see as great cars and what normal people want.

The RWD 2 Series coupe gets extra points for handling and dynamic feel while Audis are often described as dull. However, people want space and comfort more than anything else. That’s precisely what this new type of sedan will give them. You can think of it as the Volkswagen Jetta made by the Bavarians, using parts from the X1 and other models built on the same UKL1 platform.

The big difference is that, unlike the Jetta, this unnamed 1 Series or 2 Series model will have all-wheel drive as an option. At launch, engines with between 100 and 231 horsepower will be offered. However, MINI is reportedly working on a 300 horsepower 2-liter turbo that could also fit this BMW.
