Following the financial reports for the first quarter of 2013, BMW Group's CEO, Dr. Norbert Reithofer made a statement about the future plans of the Bavarian group.
Amongst other things, the Chairman of the Management Board of BMW said that the successful and encouraging results of 2012 and 2013 were the result of a long-term strategy that extends up to 2020.

Following this strategy, the Group expects to sell over 2 million cars worldwide by 2016, based on the further growth of the Chinese, US and European Markets. However, the European market seems to be lagging at the moment.

Another important aspect Reithofer talked about was the EU CO2 emission regulations that have been instated without studying the market or the feasibility of imposing a 95 g/km limit by 2020.

According to BMW's CEO, this target is impossible to achieve without using alternate drive technology. However, the EU is not encouraging or boosting incentives for technological advancements.

Other countries, on the other hand, are very active supporters of the automotive segment and further green-tech research and development.

Talking about the 2013 targets for the group, the goals remain the same as declared in April:
  • New record sales at Group level.
  • Group earnings before tax are expected to reach the previous year’s level. This assumes that global economic and political conditions do not worsen significantly.
