BMW Celebrates 9 Millionth 6 Series at Dingolfing

Back in 1978, BMW’s plant in Dingolfing started making the first ever 6 Series model, codenamed E24 and wearing the 635 CSi badge on the trunk lid. Nearly 36 years later, the same plant is celebrating the 9 millionth 6er made with a special ceremony.

Over time, the Dingolfing factory was responsible for assembling such models as the M635i until 1989 and the E63/E64 6 Series starting with 2003. However, M models were also on the assembly lines in the German facility along the way, covering from Coupe models to Convertibles and even the Gran Coupes of today.

The 9,000,000th car was one such model, an M6 Gran Coupe, handed over on Saturday, in a ceremony attended by Robert Kussel, Head of Assembly at BMW Plant Dingolfing and Dirk Werner, BMW Works Driver that symbolically handed over the keys to the car to its owner on the factory floor.

“Each vehicle represents an individual customer wish. And with this vehicle, the nine-millionth car made in Dingolfing, we have made your customer wish come true,” commented Robert Küssel.

The owner and his wife, Mr and Mrs Schulz, were taken on an exclusive tour of the facility the day before in sign of gratitude for being a BMW driver for over 37 years, a tradition began in 1977 with Mr Schulz’s first BMW, a 5 Series.

I feel very honored to receive the nine-millionth BMW made in Dingolfing,” stated Dirk Schulz at the handover ceremony. “I congratulate BMW on this model, which I consider the most beautiful in this very versatile production portfolio.”

The Dingolfing plant will soon start making the brand new 4 Series Gran Coupe that will be the 17th model to join the range of cars made there.
