You didn’t think that BMW would let the 40th anniversary of their best selling car just slip by unnoticed, right? In order to celebrate the occasion, the Germans launched the facelift version of the current 3 Series but they also took the time to film a special video for all members of the 3 Series family.
The guys brought together all six generations of the 3 Series, not only the cars but various owners as well. The most impressive story must be the one of the old man that still has an original E21 version currently driven by his grandson.

As it turns out, the man wasn’t willing to part ways with his car and. Even though he says he doesn’t have a lot of time left with us and can’t drive it anymore, he simply couldn’t let it go. Therefore, it became his grandson’s responsibility to take care of the vehicle and drive his grandpa around town in it.

Another impressive story is the one of a family in Graz, Austria. Every driver in it has a 3 Series. The father drives an E30 Coupe while his wife has a Convertible and an E46 Touring. The daughter and the youngest driver of them all has an E36 Compact for her daily use.

Unfortunately, the youngest member of the family doesn’t have a driver’s license yet but he will also drive a 3er once that problem is sorted.

‘Successful’ is an understatement when describing the 3 Series

Launched back in 1975 at the Frankfurt Auto Show, aiming to replace the iconic BMW 02 Series, the 3 Series became the Germans’ best selling car over the years. Over 14 million of them were sold ever since and today, one in four cars that are delivered with a blue and white roundel on the bonnet is a 3 Series Sedan or Touring version.

The aim from the get go was to offer a sedan with sporty abilities that were also efficient and fun to drive. Throughout its production span, the car managed to keep those characteristics intact, but also keep its identity untouched, introducing revolutionary features with every new generation.

For example, the driver-oriented dash was presented for the first time by the E21 3 Series model and remains a trademark feature of all BMWs today. Another example is the front end with twin circular headlights and the short overhangs on both the front and rear fascia.
