BMW Bring Huge Update for Singapore

Taking the example of long-time rivals Mercedes Benz, BMW will also debut a completely new aerodynamic package on their F1.09 during this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix. Although the Munich based manufacturer is to leave the series at the end of the season, they are still looking to gain momentum in the championship in order to secure a smoother transition to the new ownership provided by Swiss foundation Qadbak.

Referring strictly to their package for the Marina Bay race, BMW announced that this is the last major update of the F1.09 in the closing rounds of 2009, revealing that “everything is new except the steering wheel and the cockpit,” as confirmed by technical boss Willy Rampf.

Following the last major update in Valencia, we will arrive in Singapore with another farreaching development package. From an aerodynamics point of view, this comprises a new front wing, more deeply undercut sidepods, a further developed double diffuser and a modified rear wing,” said Rampf in a preview of the Singapore Grand Prix earlier this week.

Added to which, the car also has a totally new gearbox. So, all in all, we are expecting to take another step forward here,” concluded the BMW technical boss.

According to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, Rampf and his BMW engineers have been working on this particular update ever since the team decided to scrap KERS from their development programme. Consequently, as the data from the wind tunnel seems to show, the newly revised F1.09 is believed to have gained no less than one full second per lap as compared to the old package.

This is our ultimate non-KERS package,” said Rampf for the aforementioned source.

As confirmed by the team boss Mario Theissen, the new gearbox will be used by the Hinwil based team in 2010 also, under the new ownership of the Swiss company. The 2010 machinery will use a Ferrari drive train if allowed by the FIA to take part on next year's grid.
