A while back, we told you that BMW will soon replace the N-family engines we’ve been getting used to, with some new units, part of the B-family that is now powering the 2014 MINI models.
In a recent interview for Automotive News Europe, BMW’s Development Chief confirmed that the company will make such a move, in the future, using a new type of 500cc cylinder and piston combo that will be extremely versatile.

There will be new 1.5-, 2- and 3-liter units, making even more power than the current N versions and costing less to build. Our assumptions, therefore, were founded.

This will all be done to achieve better fuel economy, more efficiency and ensure stable profits even in times of distress, combined with new, highly flexible platforms for all future models.

Actually, according to him, all rear-wheel-drive and X models will start sharing the same platform in the future, with front-wheel-drive models (including MINI) sharing another.

Hopefully, this ‘Number One’ strategy (as they call it) will pay off without taking away too much of the feel out of the cars.
