BMW Board Changes Could Mean the 2 Series Coupe Remains Rear-Wheel Drive

It has been a long debate in Munich over the last few months and on various forums around the world: what will happen with the 2 Series Coupe? The truth of the matter is, in light of recent changes, introduction of FWD cars and all that, most of us dropped hope of seeing it continue with a RWD layout.

However, according to recent reports from Germany, it seems like the current leader of the engineering team, Mr. Klaus Froelich, wants to keep the 2 Series Coupe rear-wheel drive. It would be a winning move too.

Out of the entire line-up BMW has these days, the M235i has, by far, the best bang/buck ratio, offering unbelievable performance for its pricing range. It’s a model that was revered by every journalist out there, us included, reminding us of the iconic E46 M3 as well.

Modifying the future models to be front-wheel drive versions could cut the manufacturing costs and make the cars more profitable as well as offer more space inside. However, such a move would definitely cut the sales, as the fun factor would be all but out of the question.

As it turns out, Mr. Froelich wants to build the future 2 Series Coupe on the same 35up (or CLAR) platform as the 3, 5 and 7 Series in the future. The G11 7er will be the first model built atop this cluster architecture that is supposedly only going to be used for rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive cars.

For the 2 Series, some adjustments would be needed as it is smaller than a 3 Series but we’re pretty sure it can be done. On top of that, the materials used should be lighter and would improve the driving dynamics even more while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

It’s all going to be sorted in the future year or so as a final decision has yet to be agreed upon but we’re keeping our fingers crossed nonetheless.
