BMW latest expansion plans are taking shape in Mexico. The automaker has performed the groundbreaking ceremony at its next factory, located in San Luis Potosi.
As some of you know, BMW was first rumored to consider an investment in Mexico in 2014, and then the company confirmed the plan shortly after. Now, we know what the Germans want to manufacture in the new facility - the Sedan version of the 3 Series.
However, this will not change output in Germany. Instead, the German factory responsible for the 3 Series will continue to manufacture the model and even raise production to reach an annual capacity of 150,000 units.
However, BMW’s latest factory will also mean production changes for other facilities. The South African enterprise owned and operated by the German company will stop manufacturing the 3 Series once the plant in Mexico will be online.
Fortunately for the division, BMW will not close its operation there, and the manufacturing facility will begin making the X3 instead of the 3 Series.
Opening a new factory in Mexico made sense for the BMW Group, which achieved a 13% rise in sales of MINI and BMW cars in the first five months of this year in comparison with the same period of 2015. If we consider the fact that last year also brought a rise in sales for the two brands, the German corporation is doing great in Mexico.
Furthermore, the country is a popular choice for manufacturing automobiles, like General Motors, Ford, Fiat Chrysler, Volkswagen, Nissan, Toyota, Daimler, Honda, Mazda, and Kia also have facilities in the country. Moreover, those factories are not wasting time, as local officials have been quoted they are expecting a rise in manufacturing that will exceed a total of five million cars in 2020.
BMW’s latest factory is also advanced from an environmental point of view. The full plant, which includes a body shop, paint shop, and assembly line, will have an innovative production system. The solution will use 100% renewable energy sources, and will use water responsibly. In the entire BMW Group, this factory will have the lowest consumption of water per car, and the paint shop will produce zero wastewater.
