BMW Banking on FWD to Maintain Number One Spot!

With Mercedes-Benz actively planning to take the number one spot from BMW in coming years, as the largest luxury manufacturer, the Bavarian automaker is keen to keep its crown, and so, with Mercedes-Benz having already launched the A-Class, the production version of BMW’s front-wheel-driven Active Tourer is an extremely important car, and it really needs to be good - very good.
According to Frank Niederlaender, “In the '90s we broke with tradition when we began selling SUVs along with our sedans [. . .] Customers realized they could get the driving dynamics BMW is renowned for from an SUV. We will see the same transition happening with front-wheel drive."

Ian Robertson, BMW sales and marketing chief said: "One of the big advantages of UKL (internal designation for the new FWD platform) is that we are able to launch a lot of products almost simultaneously because we are doing the engineering at once [. . .] We will attract a broad profile of customers, from young families to people entering the later phase of life," and that’s exactly what they`re doing - they are simply attracting a new kind of buyer, who would not have normally thought of buying a BMW.

We say that as a BMW aficionado, you should not be angry at this latest news, as the Bavarian automaker has strayed so far from its core values in recent years, that a front-wheel drive car, if it`s good (and it probably will be), will be far less damaging to their image as a ‘purist brand’ than the X3, X5 and X6 were when they burst onto the scene.
