Mercedes-Benz introduced the new A-Class model on the Australian market at a starting price that certainly gave BMW goose bumps: AUD35,600. According to BMW officials, such prices are unnecessarily aggressive and might ruin the market.
After MB priced its cars so low, Audi was forced to do a somewhat similar move with their competitor for the A-Class, the A3, therefore giving BMW a reminder that the prices for the 1 Series must be dropped, in order to keep the car competitive.

“[Mercedes] have been aggressive with positioning of the A-Class, and the support they’ve put behind B-Class and C-Class. They’ve set their stall out. They have been more aggressive than needed. They’ve stuffed [the A-Class] full of kit. Spec adjusted, that car was positioned below a [VW] Golf. Clearly it’s a very single-minded attempt to push into areas where brand hasn’t been before," said BMW Australia boss Phil Horton.

“We put a lot of spec with 1 Series… we have to respond to what happens in the competitive market. With premium cars, don’t think they have never been more affordable in Australia as they are now,” he added for Car Advice.

At the moment, the Australian dollar is facing some troublesome times and the decrease of value on the international markets for the currency could bring a lot of pressure on Mercedes-Benz and Audi, that are already selling cars at lower prices than they should.
