BMW will be bringing a strong contingent at this year’s Paris Motor Show, one encompassed of two world premieres and a couple of brand exclusives. The two premieres will be the 2 Series Convertible that was just unveiled and the BMW F16 X6.
The other premieres will focus around the BMW 5 Series and its new four-cylinder diesel engines and the exclusive 7 Series Individual Final Edition that will be celebrating the end of production of the current model. Of course, other models will also be on display, including the 2 Series Active Tourer and BMW i8 plug-in sports car.
While the 2 Series Convertible and the new X6 were thoroughly discussed earlier, we didn’t have the chance to take a look at the other premieres just yet.
The 5 Series range will get two new engines on the 518d and 520d models. They are basically the same units used on the LCI X3 xDrive20d and xDrive18d and are part of the B-family of engines that are sharing up to 40% of the parts in between diesel and petrol models.
The 518d will have a 2-liter 4-cylinder powerplant under the bonnet making 150 HP and 360 Nm (265.5 lb-ft) of torque, just 7 hp more than its predecessor but enough to make a difference. Thanks to a revised 8-speed automatic transmission, the car will also accelerate to 100km/h (62 mph) faster by 0.2 seconds and will get a lower fuel consumption, rated somewhere between 4.2 and 4.7 l/100 km (56 mpg - 50 mpg) depending on the body style.
On the other hand, the 520d will now have 190 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque, 6 HP and 20 Nm more than the old engine. This plant will also be more refined than before, accelerate faster (by the same margin) and return a better fuel consumption, now rated between 4.1 and 4.7 liters per 100 km (57 to 50 mpg). Both versions are available on Sedan and Touring models and can be had in corroboration with the xDrive all-wheel drive system.
The 7 Series Individual Final Edition will be brought out as “a symbol and yardstick for luxurious driving pleasure combined with BMW’s signature dynamic flair”. As the name says, the limousine is decked with optionals from the Individual catalogue. Unfortunately, this special model will only be available on the French market.
On the outside, the car will be wearing the Individual Citrine Black metallic paint or the Mineral White metallic one, depending on the customer’s choice. However, if you don’t want one of these colors, BMW will gladly allow you to change it to any of the ones available for the 7er.
Inside, Individual fine-grain Merino full-leather will be used as well as an Individual roof liner in Alcantara. Leather trims will be available in either Platinum or Cohiba Brown. The seats and head restraints in both the front and the rear compartments come with exclusive piping in Black or Opal White.
One last novelty will come from the ConnectedDrive system that now will be updatable over the air thanks to the new built-in SIM cards that will be shipping out with the new models. Of course, at first, this feature will only be available in certain areas of the world. The good news is that the user won’t be charged for the traffic required for the updates in the navigation system.
The first model to offer over-the-air updates on its Navigation Professional system will be the 2 Series Convertible. We should also mention that the SIM cards will be 4G compatible.
