This year’s New York Auto Show will be seeing several premieres from BMW, 2 on a global scale and 3 North American ones. Either way, the audience will have plenty of cars to look over.
Probably the most highly anticipated car on present on the BMW stand will be the new M4 Convertible, unveiled today, as we said a while back. The completely new model therefore writes a new page in BMW’s history books, coming forward with impressive performance and an open top.
Fitted with the same 3-liter twin-turbo S55 engine from the M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe making 431 HP and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque, the heavier model will do 62 mph (100 km/h) in either 4.4 seconds or 4.6 seconds, depending on the gearbox, the automatic being the faster option.
Another highly anticipated model and a world premiere will be the new X4. Launched on the internet just before the Geneva Auto Show, the new Sport Activity Coupe will be introduced in the flesh in front of a live audience in New York, for the first time.
For the US market, the X4 will arrive in dealerships only with petrol engines at the moment, the xDrive28i and xDrive35i being the only two alternatives for SAC enthusiasts. Prices for the two have already been announced, the xDrive28i starting at $45,625 and the xDrive35i starting at $48,925 (destination and handling taxes included).
The 4 Series Gran Coupe, BMW Alpina B6 xDrive Gran Coupe and X3 LCI will be making their North American debuts. The former will probably gather the most attention as it is a rather peculiar appearance in the BMW line-up.
That’s because after taking two doors off the 3 Series Sedan and launching a new car as the 4 Series, the company put those two doors back and called it a 4 Series Gran Coupe. While at first it might not make a lot of sense, the 4-door Coupe actually looks good in person, bringing more style a class to the BMW line-up.
The Audi A5 Sportback rival will be arriving in the states in early summer of 2014 with only two engine choices: the 245 HP 428i and the 306 HP 435i. The former will also get an xDrive variant. Prices start at $41,225 including the $925 destination and handling tax.
Going deeper into the luxurious side of BMW, the Alpina B6 xDrive model will bring a touch of exclusivity to the US shores. The new model, making its North American debut, was announced after the Geneva Motor Show and will bring both amazing performance and luxury to the more pretentious customers.
Performance-wise, the 650i-based car will show better numbers than even the M6 Gran Coupe, thanks to the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, despite having less power. The B6 makes 540 HP and 540 lb-ft (732 Nm) of torque out of the 4.4-liter V8 under the bonnet, 20 HP less than the M6 and 40 lb-ft (52 Nm) of torque more.
Thanks to the revised 8-speed gearbox, 60 mph comes up in just 3.7 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than the M6 while the top speed is also superior to the Bimmer’s numbers, with 198 mph (318 km/h) compared to 190 mph (305 km/h). Prices start at $118,225.
Last, but not least, we have the new X3 with its diesel alternative, introduced for the first time in the US and the X5 eDrive model that is supposed to bring the best of two world together in the future.
eDrive plug-in hybrids will soon come out in serious numbers, looking to offer people a perfect balance for their daily routines as well as range anxiety-free cars for longer trips. On the X5, for example, the electric motor will be capable of carrying you around for 20 miles (32 km) at speeds up to 75 mph (120 km/h).
The power comes from a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine making 245 HP combined with an electric motor derived from the i3 making 95 HP, fed by a lithium-ion battery. The xDrive system was also changed to adapt to the new powertrain.
The total power output should be somewhere around 340 HP which would allow the X5 eDrive to have amazing performance on the road and even on track, with a fuel consumption estimated at around 62 mpg (3.8 l/100km).
