BMW Approved Roadsmart Tires for US Police Bikes

All R 1200 RT-P police bikes will be fitted with Dunlop Roadsmart tires, BMW Motorrad announced. The reasons of approving these tires by BMW were their longer life and the lower operating costs.

Frank Stevens, Authority Program Manager, BMW Motorrad USA, said that the “Operating costs for police motors are a major issue for most agencies.”

“As we know from large fleet reports, tires are the single most expensive maintenance item on a police motor, not only due to normal tire life, but due to the high number of flat tires agencies encounter from officers riding on the shoulders and break-down lanes. The Dunlop Roadsmart tires should help control operating costs due to the fact that they are not only designed to last longer, but also are priced very competitively by BMW,” Stevens continued.

The rear tire features a long-wearing compound in the center of the tire, as well as a lateral-grip compound on each shoulder, which maximize cornering performance and provide unparalleled grip and feel. The manufacturers recommends not to combine a Roadsmart tire with any other tire, not even with the D220 tires.

The BMW police bikes are used across the United States by more than 400 agencies. The bikes have 6,000 mile service intervals and a 39-month/60,000-mile limited warranty.

As for the Dunlop Roadsmart tires, they passed the California Highway Patrol run-flat protocol and are approved for use with the calibrated police speedometer. The tires feature deep, long lateral grooves which help evacuate maximum amounts of water in both straight-line and cornering conditions.

Roadsmart tires also feature Dunlop’s Jointless Band (JLB) continuously wound tread belt to ensure consistent tire diameter in all operating conditions. Both rear and front tire have micro-sized carbon particles to improve dry grip under acceleration and a special silica additive to improve wet grip.
