A while back I was telling you about BMW’s future plans in the EfficientDynamics area and that those plans include a new way of using the navigation system to further reduce fuel consumption on various models.
Back then, it was just a theory that said that the route profile might be used to make sure your car’s transmission selects the correct gear to maximize efficiency. Today, BMW confirmed it and even gave it a name: the Proactive Driving Assistant.

What does that mean, exactly? Well, it means that if you choose to use the ECO PRO Route in your navigation system, the car will know every single things there is to know about the road to your destination and how to get there fastest or with the least amount of fuel possible.

The Proactive Driving Assistant will work in tandem with the navigation system to identify rout features in good time, taking into account speed limits, corners, the start of built-up areas, roundabouts, turn-offs and motorway exits. After careful examination you will be able to choose if you want to save time or fuel and then you’ll be guided to your destination depending on your choice.

Furthermore, the system will also tell you if there’s congestion up ahead and will guide you on alternate routes to make sure you don’t waste time or energy, all in the hopes of getting even more out of your tank.

On top of all these features, the cars will, from now on, carefully analyze your driving style and make suggestions on the go. The ECO PRO Analyser will check how efficiently you accelerate, decelerate and change gear to see what alterations and suggestions can be conjured.

The same system will be active on-board all the time and check out the surroundings of your car continuously to make sure you get the most out of your car in every situation.

For example, on the highway, the cameras and radar installed on your vehicle will identify slower-moving vehicles up ahead or ones on the neighboring lanes and then will strategically change gears depending on your needs, such as overtaking or slowing down.

Everything sounds really enticing and experiencing this kind of next-level technology will surely be quite interesting but how will it actually work? Will this take all the driving pleasure out of our cars or will it make them even better?

According to BMW, no fun will be lost as the cars will use the same technology to further tune even the Sport mode to better fit our driving styles even when we’re not looking to save fuel. That’s great news for us but will it actually come true? We’ll just have to wait and see.
