BMW to Announce New Commitment in the USA

In what appears to be a very peculiar announcement on their international and US press page, BMW is inviting the media to attend a special event at their Spartanburg Plant in South Carolina, on March 28th at 1 PM.

However, the invitation doesn’t specify exactly what is going to happen there other than “a significant economic and product announcement”. What could this be?

The speakers present on the scene will include BMW Group Chairman Dr. Norbert Reithofer, US Secretary of Commerce, Penny Pritzker, South Carolina Governor, Nikki Haley, BMW Group Board Member Harald Krueger, head of the global production network and Manfred Erlacher, President of BMW Manufacturing. It is rather peculiar that the CEO of BMW North America isn’t on the guest list, Mr. Ludwig Willisch.

The speculation surrounding what the officials will say could go on for hours and it will continue throughout the days to come up until March 28, when we’ll finally know for sure. However, since the guest list is so impressive, including the US Secretary of Commerce, we think we might be in for quite a big surprise.

With recent developments around the world and China overtaking the USA as the number one market for Bavarian vehicles, this new commitment is rather interesting, showing that the Germans are still interested in making and selling more cars on the North American continent.

As for a new model, it’s highly unlikely that the officials would decide to launch a car this way. Our guess would therefore be that BMW intends to either further expand the facilities in Spartanburg (after all, they have to make 5 models there now) or build a completely new plant.
