BMW and Tesla Met Up to Discuss the Future of Electric Cars

Up until now, since BMW launched the i sub-brand, a lot of people claimed that its natural rival would be Tesla and that the German company stands no chance on the electric vehicle market. At least for now.

Well, recent developments show that everyone was wrong. We said it from the beginning: BMW and Tesla are not rivals. At least not for now, when their offerings, even though using electric motors, are aimed at different niches.

The i3 is an all-electric compact city car destined for short trips around town, commuting to work everyday or taking your kids to school. It was specially designed for such purposes and cannot compare itself with the Model S that is a luxury sedan with a bigger price tag and matching battery.

Some went as far as to compare the aforementioned Tesla creation to the i8 but here, once again, they were completely wrong. Why? Because of a number of reasons but mainly because the i8 is a hybrid!

Now, the two companies are proving beyond any doubt that they are not rivals but they plan to work together to further develop the electric car segment.

According to The Verge, representatives from the two companies met up last week to talk about a number of issues, including the Supercharger fast charging system developed by Tesla and the proliferation of EVs in large markets.

Since Tesla decided to go open source last week, BMW will surely try to integrate some of their technology in their own devices to help boost the popularity of their i models.

Furthermore, their own fast-charging devices aren’t ‘fast’ enough if we’re to compare them to Tesla’s. However, the one used by the company run by Elon Musk is not compatible with all cars and that might be the issue they are working on right now. Unfortunately, the two parties involved in these discussions are keeping their lips extremely tight at the moment so we can’t know for sure what they discussed. Rest assured though, we’ll keep you posted!
