This weekend, BMW and MINI surprised the automotive scene introducing the first ever, mass-produced integration of a GoPro camera with an automobile’s on-board infotainment system. Simply put, you can now control your GoPro device using iDrive.
In order to make this possible, BMW’s Technology Office and GoPro have been working together for quite a while, to offer a perfectly good working app for those owners that ticked the ‘BMW Apps’ or ‘MINI Connected’ options when they ordered their cars.

A GoPro camera can now be configured and controlled using the iDrive system, for all the new cars. For model year 2012 cars and later, the same functionality will be available starting with July 2014. They also have to be equipped with the app support feature.

The app is now available in the iTunes store, for free, for all of you that have wi-fi equipped GoPro cameras and want to use them comfortable inside your BMW or MINI cars.

“The power and flexibility of the BMW Group App Integration Platform coupled with GoPro’s advanced camera technology brings new, safe, and engaging experiences to the enthusiasts that were previously not possible. When the camera is connected to the car, it allows GoPro’s app to present context-appropriate presets that allow the enthusiast to capture the perfect shot,” said Phil Johnston, Head of BMW Group AppCenter USA.

“GoPro has deep roots in motorsports and is passionate about enabling drivers to capture their road or track experience,” said Adam Silver, GoPro Director of Strategic Product Opportunities. “The GoPro and BMW collaboration sets a new standard in the category and is an important first step in a partnership designed to deliver next-level integration between camera and car.”

Of course, apart from the added comfort of using the GoPro through the infotainment system, the new functionality also helps keep you focused on the road, reducing driver distraction to a minimum. We should also mention that you can use your car’s central screen to aim the camera and you get to choose from six pre-set camera modes.
