As part of their partnership with Miami-based Art Basel stages art shows for Modern and Contemporary works, BMW has recently announced a new project. Named the BMW Art Journey, the new global collaboration will support emerging artists by sending them into creative discovery trips.
Auto makers are crazy about fashion as they are about art, because they believe this makes them harder, better, faster, stronger... OK, that's Kanye West singing but you get the point. That is pretty much what they do. Take, for example, the Mercedes Fashion Week or Bugatti’s exclusive outwear. Or, even better look, at all the money big car manufacturers pump in limited edition timepieces models.
Getting back to BMW’s little art game, according to their press release, the new project will start next year. Art Basel and the Germans will support emerging artists by awarding the BMW Art Journey, enabling them to go on their own journey of creative discovery. It’s basically a mobile studio that will take the artists almost anywhere in the world, where they will conduct research, make new contacts and create new work.
BMW will award the prize twice a year to one artist among those who exhibit in Miami Beach and Hong Kong. Two international expert juries will determine a shortlists of three artists per sector and invite them to submit proposals for a journey. One artist from each shortlist will then be selected, in a second round of judging.
The one chosen from the Discoveries sector of Art Basel’s show in Hong Kong, taking place in March 2015, will be announced in the summer of 2015, while those from the Positions sector of Art Basel in Miami Beach taking place in December 2015, in early 2016. According to BMW, the journeys will be documented and shared in publications, digital and social media.
