BMW Aim to Become Engine Supplier in 2010

Mercedes now have a serious competitor to landing an engine deal with Red Bull Racing for 2010. According to media reports in Germany, BMW has confirmed its plans to become engine supplier in Formula One starting next year.

We have the capacity to make our engines available to other teams,” revealed motorsport boss Mario Theissen in an interview with Germany's Bild newspaper.

If we are to look at the constructors' list for 2010, there are only 3 teams that are yet to decide on an engine partner for the upcoming season. Red Bull Racing, Scuderia Toro Rosso and Brawn GP are all negotiating for an engine package, with Mercedes looking like a pole sitter for landing RBR and Brawn.

Earlier this year, Mercedes' motorsport boss Norbert Haug admitted the German car maker will push for a 3-year extension with Brawn GP. As for the two Red Bull backed teams, the majority of rumors surfacing in the media lead to a Red Bull Racing – Mercedes deal next year.

Milton Keynes team boss Christian Horner once again insisted that his outfit is still in talks for securing an engine package for next season, while Toro Rosso seems outside the public eye for the time being. After the German Grand Prix the last weekend, the British official said he is willing to wait a long time before making up his mind.

Regarding our engine choice, we can wait even until the winter time,” said Horner.

Curiously enough, the two teams eyed by both Mercedes and BMW as engine partners for 2010 are currently demanding leaders in this year's championship. Only Red Bull and Brawn GP drivers have so far won a race in 2009, while the two teams are the only ones with real chances of clinching the constructors' crown this year.
