When the EPA rated BMW's new F30 328d to 45 MPG everyone was stunned. With such great numbers behind it and the usual premium quality to back it up, the diesel 3er should be a clear favorite, even in the US.
However, Americans are still reticent towards what they consider 'stinky diesels' and some careful marketing tricks should be enough to make the 328d a popular choice, even in North America.
That's exactly what their doing. The Smart ForTwo is quite a popular car in the US, especially thanks to its compact size and fuel efficiency. But even that car does on 38 miles per gallon and is nowhere near the 45 of the Bimmer.
Furthermore, you'll feel like sitting inside a cardboard box all the time and the fuel tank will allow you to go on for about 300 miles, whereas the BMW will allow you a range of 675 miles.
