BMW ActiveE to Be Charged by AeroVironment

It has become a habit in today's automotive industry for electric vehicle charging solutions providers to seek partnerships with the manufacturers that plan to launch EVs on the market. In this increasingly competitive environment, having a big name attached to your business might be just what the doctor prescribed.

With Nissan and Chevrolet already selecting their charging partners for the Leaf and Volt, the eyes of the industry turned towards BMW, who is getting ready to launch in ActiveE model later this year. In the US, news surfaced this week, the car maker has already chosen its charging partner: AeroVironment.

Of course, naming a company a preferred charging provider might not seem like much for the owner of an electric vehicle, nor for the auto maker itself, but it is expected to work wonders for the provider in question.

“BMW looked around and did a thorough vetting of suppliers and decided our process was BMW-worthy,” Kristen Helsel, director of EV Solutions at AeroVironment, said in an interview with The New York Times. “It’s a great validation.”

With 700 ActiveE models coming to the US starting later this year, AeroVironment is getting ready for some busy days ahead. The company will send its people to the homes of those who plan on leasing an ActiveE, assess the situation and install a 240-volt EVSE-RS charger.

BMW's second electric model, after the MINI E, is powered by an electric synchronous motor that produces 125 hp and 250 Nm of torque. The electric motor draws its power from three lithium-ion batteries.
