Since the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe concept was unveiled at the 2013 Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance, all sorts of reports kept saying that BMW will use the impressive design study to bring the 8 Series model back.
Speaking to Autocar, BMW research & development chief Herbert Diess said that while a decision regarding a new 8 Series “is still a long way off”, the automaker is indeed studying the possibility of launching a production vehicle based on the Gran Lusso Coupe.
“The Gran Lusso concept was very well received. We’re looking into the possibility of production, but a decision is still a way off,” he said.
Introduced in 1989, the BMW 8 Series (E31) was produced through 1999 in only 31,062 units. Powered by V8 and V12 engines, the flagship couple offered an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h) and up to 375 HP.
