BMW’s 8 Series, a car that only had one generation, is being prepped to return to the market. The second generation of this car is expected to have a convertible version, which has already been spied by our photographers.
As we previously reported, the 8 Series Cabriolet prototype that was spied had what appeared to be a soft-top roof. The possibility of it having a metal roof that is concealed by a layer of fabric is unlikely, because a convertible system of that kind has not been applied on a car this large.
Furthermore, it could prove too cumbersome even for some German engineers that would enjoy a challenge.
We have already determined that the prototype seen in the photo gallery of this story is not a 6 Series successor, because its body is visibly larger than the current generation of that model. BMW is not expected to expand the 6 Series by such a margin, which could only mean that the company is planning an 8 Series.
Recent trademark filings also support that agenda, especially since the German brand has already secured some combinations that have never been used in production.

Currently, the M6 Cabriolet seems to be the vehicle with the highest starting price in this range, but the 8 Series Convertible in its range-topping version should become the next holder of this title.
BMW’s flagship car, the 8 Series, will become the rival of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe just like the 7 Series competes with the sedan version of the same model. BMW is expected to return to the 8 Series name because that model will command a higher purchase price, and it will also justify the expansion of the body when compared to the ongoing 6 Series.
