Let's be honest, we already know that the Mercedes S-Class is the benchmark in this segment, always has been. What's more, even though it's a little old, it went up against the new 7 Series on an episode of Motor Trend Head 2 Head and won.
But while we saw the 750Li and S550 duke it out last time, this UK review is all about dirty luxury diesels. All three models have the popular 6-cylinder turbocharged configuration. Which is the third? You can't have a full-size luxury comparison without taking the Audi A8L and its TDI into consideration, even though it dates back to 2010.

Mat Wattson has his own way of entertaining us tired old keyboard warriors. And I bet you've never seen somebody try to fit a child pram around the optional refrigerator in the back of an S-Class. Big bottle test? Yeah, it's got that too. The Audi has lots of cubbies and storage. However, it's got a dated interior that lets it down. The only other upside for the granny of this test is that it's surprisingly fun to drive and it comes with the standard all-wheel-drive.

Even though lots of pro reviewers call them "useless gimmicks" the ultra high-tech features being offered are what make or break flagship German cars. That's why you see the new BMW 7 Series everywhere, even though it's been launched recently.

As for the drag race, The 7 Series wins it because of the unfair advantage of an extra turbocharger. But seeing the aging A8 in front of the S-Class makes us want to tell Mercedes to get its diesel stuff together.

So what's the conclusion of the review from Britain? The same as the one from Motor Trend, that the S-Class is nearly perfect at what it does, which is wafting along in total comfort. And when Mat says there're only a couple of decibels between them, it's actually a huge deal. The human ear apparently perceives a 70 dB sound as being twice as loud as a 60 dB one.
