BMW 6 Series Convertible Will Be Unveiled at Detroit

With dozens of carmakers presenting hundreds of different models, both old and brand new, together with tens of design concepts, its is difficult to imagine that one particular car can stand out at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. However, we predict the world premiere of the new BMW 6 Series Convertible will be something to behold. When most carmakers introduce a new vehicle, whether production-ready or conceptual, they do so at a major auto show. But before that, they release photos and details a few weeks before the event. BMW wanted their new convertible to get the most attention possible, so the images were released during the hype of the LA Show, but they didn’t unveil the car there. Instead, they opted to do that during the 2011 NAIAS, alongside the new X3, the revised 1 Series coupe and convertible and the new 1 Series M Coupe. The first model to be available on American soil will be the BMW 650i Convertible. Its V8 power unit, fitted with BMW TwinPower Turbo and direct fuel injection, delivers 400 hp (300 kW) peaking at 6,400 rpm and 450 pound-feet of torque (from 1,750 to 4,500 rpm). For the US market, the car will be available with either a six-speed manual transmission, or an eight-speed automatic sports transmission. Power is sent to the rear wheels, resulting in a 0-62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) time of 4.9 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). The four-seater convertible’s interior will features the elegantly flat, free-standing Control Display of the iDrive operating system, fitted as standard. BMW has stuck with a traditional cloth top, which can be opened in 19 seconds and closed in 24 seconds at speeds of up to 25 mph (40km/h). autoevolution will be attending the 2011 NAIAS, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of the vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions presented at the event.
