The 5 Series GT was showcased at a special, teaser-like event in Munich, but the official media and public presentation will be made in March, at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. Chris Bangle attended the event as did his follower, Adrian van Hooydonk.
What was until recently known as the Progressive Activity Sedan, is an odd twist and turn of designs from three other BMW models. The new 5 series is a combination between the 7 series, that inspired the L-shaped taillights and the large front grille and the now not-sure-we'll-produce-it CS Concept, first displayed in 2007 and later in April 2008 at the New York International Auto Show.
The new 5er has a longer wheelbase, comparable to that of the 7 series, making the interior cabin space larger, BMWBlog reports. The third BMW that put something of its own into the GT is the BMW X6, that inspired the rear shape of the car, the trunk lifting up hatchback style. Specs, details and official photos of the new model are expected later today.
At the beginning of the year, BMW confirmed that it is moving forward with the plans to build the 5-Series GT and will target the vehicle at “drivers who want an SUV but are not looking for a full-scale sports-utility.”
