Japan sure seems to love limited edition BMWs. That seems to ring true even when the German company offers cars that are dubbed as ‘special edition’ but are actually just configured in a certain way. It’s the case of the latest such offering in the land of the rising sun: the BMW 5 Series Grace Line.
According to the local BMW website, this is a car that has a bunch of special features on, such as 18” double-spoke wheels, Adaptive LED headlights with cornering lights and selective beam, LED fog lamps, BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line exterior trims and Metallic Paint in either Mineral Grey or Mineral White.

Inside the cabin you get Dakota leather in Oyster as well as electric sport seats, multi-function M Sport steering wheel, Driving Assistant (lane change warning, blind spot detection) and trims in the body color of the car (this depends on what you go for).

As you can tell, there isn’t a lot of ‘specialness’ offered here it’s just a certain combination of options. Standard equipment includes PDC, rearview camera, DSC, ACC, lane departure warning, ConnectedDrive, climate control and run-flat tires amongst others.

Prices are a bit on the hefty side, this being marketed as a special edition. The 5 Series Grace Line edition is available in two guises: 523d and 523i versions. Yes, those are actual models in Japan.

They are actually the 520d and 520i versions from Europe. That means both of them use a 2-liter petrol/diesel 4-cylinder engine that makes 184 HP and different amounts of torque. The petrol fed one has 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) while the diesel has 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) on its side.

Depending on your choice, you’ll have to pay either JPY7.2 million ($58,000) for the least efficient model or JPY7.43 million ($59,700) for the less thirsty alternative.
