Transferring the eDrive technology from the i3 and i8 into new, more traditional models was one of the initial plans of BMW when it started working on the i sub-brand. By now things are getting pretty obvious, our spy photographers already catching up with a plug-in hybrid 3 Series and X5.
However, BMW is still quiet about the whole story, giving us only a few hints of what we should expect and not the complete story, just yet. The BMW innovation days 2014 brought forward a bit more info on the the whole ordeal, including the confirmation that more hybrids will show up in the near future apart from the X5.

Now we’re getting info that a 5 Series Sedan model will follow, also equipped with the proactive drive system. The specs, however, are still undisclosed.

Either way, I’m expecting it to be closely similar to the eDrive Concept X5 presented at IAA in Frankfurt, last September. That particular concept, that is heading for production as we speak, is claimed to make it to 62 mph in less than 7 seconds and has is intended to return, on average, a fuel consumption of approximately 3.8 l/100 km (74 mpg imp) in the EU test cycle, with CO2 emissions rated well below 100 g/km, somewhere near the 90g limit.

Of course, all-electric movement will also be available for up to 30 km (over 18 miles). In this case, the emissions will actually be zero. This will also be the first car to combine xDrive technology with an electric drivetrain.

Unlike the i8 that uses a 3-cylinder 1.5-liter engine for its internal combustion unit, the X5 will be using a 4-cylinder 2-liter turbocharged unit decked with the latest TwinPower Turbo Technology. My guess is that it will be making around 190 HP.

The new engine will also be lighter than before, using aluminum and magnesium all around, to make things even more eco-friendly, at the same time combining thermal management and acoustic improvements.

Since the 5 Series Sedan will probably be lighter than the X5, the performance it will return could be better than on the Sport Activity Vehicle both in straight-up numbers and in fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions.

The two will be available at BMW’s Innovation Days 2014 for a quick test drive.
