In honor of the original Performance Package car that was revealed back when the E46 3 Series was in production, BMW is now offering a 435i ZHP Coupe model to 100 lucky owners. The car was unveiled today, and it shows some impressive specs.
In standard guise, the 435i has 306 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque coming in from the N55 3-liter inline 6-cylinder turbocharged engine. That’s a long gone feature though as the ZHP model now sports no less than 335 HP and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque. That’s all due to an M Performance Power Kit that you can also get for your car be it a special edition or not.

Other changes for the ZHP 435i include a new M Performance engine air intake system and M Performance engine cover and rocker panel decals.

In pure performance numbers, the limited-run model offers noticeable improvements. The 0-60 mph run (0-96 km/h) now takes 0.2 seconds less than the standard car, which means you’ll be doing the benchmark speed in 4.9 seconds. At the same time, going from 50 to 75 mph (80-120 km/h) takes half a second less.

Of course, the added torque and horsepower will also translate into better pedal response in the Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ driving modes. Even the exhaust sound is improved due to the M Performance Power Kit and, according to BMW, you’ll get a nice burble in overrun conditions even in Comfort mode. That might also be due to the M Performance Exhaust that this particular model will be getting.

It’s made of stainless steel and sheds 8.8 lbs (4 kg) off the gross weight of the car. A the same time it improves the gas flow, reduces backpressure and adds more performance to the mix. The two stainless steel tips have a brushed finish that stands out.

The ZHP models will also have the M Performance aerodynamics package installed, made up of a front and rear spoiler, a rear diffuser, and new black kidney grilles. The front and rear spoilers are made of carbon fiber while the rear diffuser is made of PUR-RIM, a specially crafted polymer.

Other key characteristics include the track handling package and the limited-slip differential, both of which are new for 2016 model year versions. The track handling package is made up of 18” Orbit Grey V-Spoke wheels and M Sports brakes as well as the Adaptive M Suspension with variable dampers and Variable Sports Steering.

The limited-slip differential uses three clutch plates for a total of 30% lockup on acceleration and 9 percent lockup on deceleration. This lockup provides instant power to the wheel that has the greatest amount of grip to gain better traction out of tight corners.

Unfortunately, only 100 editions of the 435i ZHP model will be built, and they will be available with both 8-speed automatic and 6-speed manual gearboxes. Customers can have their pick of only two color choices: Alpine White or Black Sapphire Metallic. Production is slated to begin in July, and the cars will be available for order only in selected BMW M centers.

Seems rather restrictive, right? Well, here’s a pro tip: you can get every single add-on for the ZHP model for your car without it being a 435i ZHP Coupe limited-edition car. The M Performance Parts included in this mix are available for separate purchase as we’re writing this article.
