BMW 335i vs Audi S4 by Sportauto.de

After seeing the new F30 335i compared to wrong cars so many times, it's actually refreshing to watch it going head to head with a long-time rival, like the Audi S4. Taking both cars to the track, Sportauto.de came up with an interesting conclusion.

Comparing the engines of the two sedans you'll notice that the Audi has a slight advantage. It's 3-liter V6 turbocharged engine produces 333 HP and 325 lb-ft (441 Nm) of torque, while BMW's N55 engine delivers 306 HP and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque.

However, when talking about performance, you can't ignore the weight factor. That's why BMW is struggling to keep its current cars as slim as possible. When compared to the  S4, the 335i weighs 177 kg (390 lb) less, with a kerb weight of only 1,618 kg (3,567 lb). That translates into better fuel consumption, more agility and improved handling on the race track.

Speaking of fuel consumption, the real-life numbers the guys got after testing the 2 cars were surprising, to say the least. The Audi registered a maximum of 13.9 l/100km (16.9 mpg) whilst the BMW stopped at 12.8 l/100 km (18.3 mpg). When comparing the lowest figures recorded, the 3er wins with 8 l/100km (29.4 mpg) compared to the S4's 11.8 l/100km (19.9 mpg).

Another win for the BMW was recorded in the braking efficiency department. After the 10th emergency break from 100 km/h (62 mph) the Bimmer managed to stop two feet (60 cm) sooner than the S4. In real-life situations that can be the difference that saves a life.

Overall, the 335i wins again, even though it was slightly slower than its "quattro" rival on the track. The main aspects that tipped the balance in favor of the Bavarian car were the fuel consumption figures, the overall feel and the price. Starting at €45,860 ($58,632) the 335i is almost €10,000 ($12,802) cheaper than the Audi but that's not all. The tested S4 had a price of nearly €70,000 ($90,000) and that is M3 territory and there's no need to tell you what would happen is the S4 was compared to the M3.
