BMW revealed the 3.0 CSL Hommage Concept during Concorso D'Eleganza Villa d'Este, and we really don't need to explain what the prototype stands for due to its well-chosen name.
However, with the risk of becoming a little boring for BMW-addicted autoevolution readers, let's look back in history and see what the original 3.0 CSL stood for.

BMW introduced the 3.0 CSL in May 1972, as a homologation special built to make the car suitable for European Touring Car Championship racing. L comes from 'leicht', which means 'light' in German, and it was a first for BMW in terms of nomination because until then L stood for 'lang', which means 'long' in German.

The car used a 3,003 cc (183.3 cu in) engine and when homologation was approved; it came with an aerodynamic body kit that made the car earn its 'Batmobile' nickname due to its fins and wings designed to cut through the air.

Some say it also had a shark nose, which is the first thing you notice in the 3.0 CSL Hommage concept. The kidney grille is also there, but engineers and designers used modern materials like carbon fiber and CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) to bring the 3.0 CSL back to life with a contemporary twist.

“The BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage represents a nod to the engineering achievement exemplified by the BMW 3.0 CSL in its lightweight design and performance. With intelligent lightweight construction and modern materials, the 3.0 CSL Hommage brings the character of that earlier model into the 21st century, showing it in a new and exciting guise,” explained Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President of the BMW Group's Design dep.

The concept's cabin is all about racing, and that's easy to tell from the pair of lightweight seats with six-point safety belts. Aluminum pedals, a bespoke steering wheel yelling 'jump in and drive' plus a roll cage and the digital instrument cluster are the finishing motorsport-flavored touches inside the 3.0 CSL Hommage prototype.
