Since BMW launched the Gran Turismo 3 Series earlier this year, we've been wondering what car from its German competition could go against it. Mercedes-Benz doesn't have anything even close to the GT at the moment and Audi has something relatively close.
We're talking, of course, about the A5 Sportback. However, they are the same only in the fact that they both have 4 doors without frames and a big tailgate at the back. Other than that, differences are pretty obvious.
The guys from auto motor und sport decided to pit them one against another to see which one they like best, especially since their offers are similar in engine options and price ranges.
Audi came prepared with a 3-liter TFSI engine that develops 270 HP and 400 Nm of torque. BMW on the other hand had the traditional N55 engine with 306 HP and 400 Nm of torque and the 8-speed gearbox that easily outpaced A5's 7-speeder.
On the inside, the 3er wins by a big margin, the headroom, legroom and luggage space being uncontested by the Audi. Even the iDrive system that was criticized a while back, was updated and works better than the MMI interface inside the competitor.
The one point where the Sportback won was in ride comfort. The 3 Series GT, even with the adaptive dampers, couldn't outpace the comfort of the Audi, according to auto motor und sport.
Bottom line, the 3er wins because of its more practical and spacious body, high comfort and extraordinary engine. It loses some points because of the lack of agility but that's not the main interest for a family car.
