BMW 3 Series GT, Debut in 2011?

The newly discovered appeal of the German manufacturer for the GT nameplate (at least their version of the GT) will continue in the following years, as it would appear they are planning the introduction of a new model to the 3 Series range, namely the 335i GT.

According to a report by Inside Line citing inside sources, the new Gran Turismo will enter showrooms in 2011. The work mule in the BMW stable is dubbed V3 or Progressive Activity Coupe and was built using the future 3 Series platform.

As was to be expected, the new GT will take some of the features debuted by BMW with the 5 Series GT. Combining design cues from a touring and a shooting brake model, the 3 Series GT benefits from the same "lift glass" as seen in the 5 Series GT. BMWblog reports that the 335i GT will get a full panoramic roof, stretching from the windscreen to the rear window.

As for engine choices, the 3 Series GT is rumored to be fitted with 3.0l six cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, with the possibility of a four cylinder unit being taken under advisement. Pricewise, the GT will be slotted in between the 3 and 5 Series.

According to the aforementioned source, the 335i GT will hit the streets in testing guise sometimes in September. To go even further, rumors say the 3 series GT will be shown as a concept at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The news of the new GT surfaced after BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer said that his company hasn't "canceled the crossover of the 3 Series, as it is considered a volume builder with which we can earn good money."
