When BMW decided to sell the European 320d under the 328d name in America, we instantly thought about two things. Firstly, it was a good car to bring to the US, and secondly that it's the marketing is going to get a little strange.
Just like we predicted, a 2-liter diesel BMW is tricky to market in the US. Just like General Motors, who compared the Cruze Diesel to an old muscle car, BMW suggests the 328d has more torque than modern sportscar.
That's kind of missing the point when real world numbers will show diesels are more efficient, but real world numbers don't make for good commercials.
Of these three commercials for the 3 Series diesel, we only like the first one because it's got the best driving footage, it's wittier and the message is simple. Coming clean with the strict Japanese father-in-law? Come on BMW, you can do a lot better than that!
