BMW’s latest small coupe offering, the 2 Series, is currently available around the world, Australia included. However, at the moment, only a couple of models made it across the globe, most countries being limited to choosing between only three of them.
It’s the case of the Aussies too that, for now, have to pick between the entry-level 220i and the high-end M235i if they want their cars to run on petrol. There’s also the diesel alternative, in the shape of the 220d.
However, starting September, there will be another car added to the mix, the 228i. If the 220i model uses a 2-liter turbocharged petrol engine making 184 HP and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque, the 228i will be using the same architecture but with a little more power: 245 HP and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.
With such numbers, the mid-range 2er can do the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint in 5.7 seconds when fitted with the 8-speed automatic gearbox and 0.1 seconds slower with the manual 6-speed. It’s quite a fast car but compared to the M235i model, it falls almost a seconds short.
It does make up for it though, in both pricing and fuel economy. If the M235i will do around 29 mpg (8.1 l/100 km) on a combined cycle, the 228i is capable of 35.6 mpg (6.6 l/100 km) according to BMW.
Furthermore, the lighter construction of the 228i might make it even more agile in corners than its M Performance brother, if you fit it with some M Performance Parts available in a special catalog.
Prices for the 228i will start at AUD64,400 in Australia, a price AUD13,900 higher than for the 220i but AUD16,000 lower than the M235i.
Standard equipment includes auto headlights and wipers, front and rear parking sensors, climate control, sports seats, anti-dazzle interior rear-view mirror, and Business navigation system with a 6.5-inch screen, six-speaker audio system, and Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming functionality.
You also get 18 inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, bi-xenon headlights and variable sport steering for this kind of money, plenty of kit to leave it at that and stop worrying about added costs in extra optional features.
