When the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer was launched, the company presented it with only three engine choices: the 218i, 225i and 218d. Today, the Germans unveiled three new options and confirmed that they will be available with the xDrive all-wheel drive system.
The new engine choices will be introduced in the shape of the 220i, 220d and 216d which will become the new entry-level model in Europe. All new plants are part of the B family of engines that has been rolled out initially on the new MINI and is now dripping into the BMW range.

The 220i is probably the most anticipated model here, featuring the same plant used on the Cooper S, a 2-liter 4-cylinder B48 engine making 192 HP and 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) of torque. Sending the power to the front axle alone, the 220i will return a fuel consumption between 6.1 and 5.9 l/100 km (39.8 to 38.5 mpg) while CO2 levels remain around the 140 grams/km region.

This is also a pretty fast car, the 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint being done in 7.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of 230 km/h (143 mph). The best news is that you can either get it with a manual 6-speed gearbox or the automatic 8-speed unit. The same engine is expected to migrate to all x20i models from BMW in the near future.

As for the 220d, it’s the same story all over again. The B47 engine used on it is the same as on the LCI X3 xDrive20d and the 520d that will start production in November. It makes 190 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque returning an average fuel consumption of 4.5 to 4.4 l/100 km (53.4 to 52.2 mpg). This will become the top of the range diesel model in the 2 Series Active Tourer range.

However, it’s not the most fuel-efficient. That mention goes to the 216d that was just announced. It uses the same diesel engine from the MINI Cooper D, the B37 1.5-liter 3-cylinder making 116 HP and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque.

With such numbers, the fuel consumption should go down to 3.9 l/100 km (60.3 mpg) while CO2 emission could go under the 100 grams/km limit, in certain conditions. Of course, the dynamic performances of this model aren’t on par with the other ones, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 10.6 seconds and reaching a top speed of just 195 km/h (121 mph).

As for xDrive, it will be available on the top of the range petrol and diesel models. On both the xDrive 220d and xDrive 225i models, the system will be coming only with the 8-speed Steptronic transmission however.
