The legendary New Class was a life-saver for BMW that was in deep trouble during the 50s and 60s, being close to bankruptcy. Releasing the legendary 1500 saved the company and allowed the engineers to create such follow up cars like the 02 Series.

Along the years they remained stuck into BMW aficionados' heads as the first out of many brilliant cars. The 2002 was actually the first car from Bavaria that drove like we're used to.

It was created because the 1500 and 1600 models lacked the power the Management wanted at those times and was fitted with 2-liter engines, some of them turbocharged, like the one fitted on 2002tii models.

They were extremely rare because they'd take up a lot of fuel. However, 2002tii Touring models were even more scarce to find those days. That's why seeing one these days is a true rare moment.

The guys from Jalopnik found one and thankfully took a bunch of pictures to share with us. As you can see, from the front you couldn't tell it's a touring model but step to the side and the reality hits you: you're in the presence of legend.

Even with the slightly weird look, the car is still enjoyable to the max, all these years later. Actually, in its 40 years of history, the car gathered only 70,000 km (40,000 miles) on the odometer and that is remarkable.
