After Aston Martin and Zagato kicked off the 2016 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este debuts with a bite-the-back-of-your-hand beautiful concept based on the Vanquish, BMW follows suit with the 2002 Hommage Concept. Looks like a BMW M2 on steroids, doesn’t it?
50 year ago, give or take a few months, the German automaker introduced the 02 Series. The reference point in the range of compact sedans that established BMW as a big player is the 2002, hence the name of the concept. "The 2002 sat at the top of the range and was the first series-produced car anywhere in Europe to come with turbo technology,” declared Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice president of design at BMW AG.

“That set the seal on the coupe as a genuine sports car. At the same time, the 2002 Turbo was at the technological vanguard of engine development at BMW. The BMW 2002 Hommage is our way of raising a glass to all these achievements," added van Hooydonk. It’s no wonder the basis of the concept car is the BMW M2, the hottest M model of the moment and the rightful heir of the BMW 2002 Turbo.

Up front, the 2002 Hommage Concept prides itself on two round headlights with golden light surrounds and slim turn signals housed separately. The front spoiler is also a nod to the 2002 Turbo, as is the boxy profile. The three-box layout is dominated by flared fenders and a carbon fiber decorative strip running along the shoulder line. By comparison, the original used chrome because, well, carbon fiber wasn’t popular back then.

The only disappointment I have regarding the 2016 BMW 2002 Hommage Concept is the engine. More to the point, BMW sort of forgot to tell what’s hiding under the hood. Is it the six-cylinder turbo that motivates the M2? Is it a four-cylinder turbo diesel? Hell knows, but then again, it’s not ridiculous to assume that it uses forced induction.

Editor's note: The paint finish is called Space Race Metal. Now that’s a cool name for a band if you ask me.
