BMW 2 Series Prototype Crash Closes Autobahn

This is something you don't see everyday. Usually, spy photographers have to climb up trees and sleep in trenches to get some good shots of various prototypes. It wasn't the case with one 2er, the other day.

According to a german website, while testing a 2 Series prototype, one unlucky BMW test driver crashed on the A72 Autobahn, somewhere near Zwickau. Sources say that he was driving at high speeds and lost control of the car.

The crash took down some 50 meters of guardrail and the car was tossed another 150 meters (492 ft.) ahead on the highway, some debris even landing on the oncoming lanes, damaging some cars.

The Autobahn had to be closed for a couple of hours to clear the debris and take away the BMW prototype before too many curious eyes took too many photos of the wreck.

Fortunately, the driver wasn't injured too bad and that says a lot about the safety features of the new car. If crashing at high speeds and taking down 50 meters (164 ft.) of guardrail left the driver almost unscathed, I guess we can presume that the car is pretty safe.
