BMW 2 Series Active Tourer Unlikely to Hit US Market Before 2016

For some people, the reluctance BMW is showing towards introducing the new 2 Series Active Tourer in the US is quite perplexing. A lot of soccer moms and oter interested parties are waiting for the blue and white roundel to show up across the pond, in a FWD, MPV-like guise.

However, according to Automotive News, the new Bimmer won't make it States-side earlier than 2016. Why? Well, BMW didn't provide an actual answer but we can think of a couple of reasons.

One could be that they don't want to dilute the brand image they have across the Atlantic, keeping everybody happy, as the US fanbase is probably the biggest one in the world right now.

Second, they might be worried that the new model won't be able to face the steep competition represented by Mazda's 5 model, Ford C-Max and Toyota Prius V that are currently dominating the market.

Furthermore, according to a public statement given by BMW's Vice President of Product Management for lower-series cars, Frank Niederlaender, the 2SAT wasn't designed for American roads:
"You have a lot of space and wide streets, and the X cars are much more useful." Ipotethical reason number 3 emerges: they are pushing the market towards X models that, coincidentaly, are also being built in the US.

An interesting detail about the plans the company has for the new model on the North American continent is the line-up for the New York Auto Show in April, where the 2 Series Active Tourer won't make an appearance but will be replaced by the new X4 Sport Activity Coupe.
