BMW 2 Series Active Tourer Hybrid Spied on Public Roads

Remember the two BMW i8s that we spotted in France, a while back? They looked really good together but, apparently, they weren’t the only Bimmers in the convoy.

Right next to them was a new car, one that wasn’t properly launched yet. We’re talking about the 2 Series Active Tourer hybrid, an even more eco-friendly alternative from Bavaria that we were actually expecting.

That’s because the trend over at BMW seems to be developing eDrive alternatives that use both an petrol engine and an electric motor alongside. Just like the X5 eDrive Concept and the 3 Series plug-in hybrid we saw a while back, the 2 Series will also join in the fun.

However, we’re expecting the 2er to use smaller units. That’s because it’s not a full-on SUV like the X5 and it doesn’t need 340 HP and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of torque to get soccer moms and their kids to school and back again.

Most likely, the petrol engine could be a detuned 2-liter unit making somewhere around 200 HP or even a 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder one making around 150. As for the electric unit, the same might apply, to help with the electric range. If on the X5 the electric motor makes 95 HP and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque, in this application it could be down to around 75.

Expect an electric range of up to over 20 miles (35 km) though, and a combined fuel consumption well under what we’re used to. As for the launch date for this eco-friendly MPV from BMW, expect it to show up in early 2015 at the Detroit Auto Show.
