BMW 1.5-Liter Turbocharged Engine Sounds Excellent!

With the turbocharging craze which is sweeping the entire automotive world, BMW was bound to follow the trend, as it offers several important advantages over naturally-aspirated units: more power from less displacement, less nasty stuff coming out of the back and much better efficiency when compared to a naturally-aspirated unit of the same power.

However, with the introduction of turbocharged four-cylinder units, higher-powered BMW now sound like hot hatches, rather than the burbling and snarling sound of their old straight-six units. Now, though, with their new 1.5-liter three-cylinder unit, BMW has brought back some of the glorious sound its customers had gotten used to, and they’ve done so from engines which are exactly half the size of BMW’s old six-pot units, despite being able to match them on power - this particular engine has 180 hp and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft), so it’s very good for a 1.5-liter road car engine.

Outputs for this particular engine range from 120 hp, all the way up to 220 hp. We must admit to having very high expectations of this new BMW engine, and we hope to get our hands one one very soon. We are also wondering what the 'dreizylinder-turbo' would sound like with a straight exhaust, with no cat.
