In the war of the hot hatches not only the range-topping models count. Most people won’t go for the M135i or the A45 AMG, they’ll most likely go for lesser powered models that better fit their needs. Whilst the two mentioned earlier do make you feel alive on the track, they are not the best to live with everyday.
The guys from Malaysia’s PaulTan.org took some of them out for a quick test, the car they think will be most popular in their country. Now, it’s noticeable that they are just at the beginning of their video reviews so don’t be too harsh on them.

The cars they chose were the BMW 125i, Mercedes-Benz A250, Volvo V40 T5 and Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk7. All of them use 2-liter turbocharged engines with similar power outputs and torque numbers.

The BMW has 218 HP at its disposal, with an accompanying 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) of torque and the 8-speed automatic gearbox that makes it a true hot hatch. All the other cars come it at roughly the same numbers, with the exception of the Volvo that has 254 HP under the bonnet.

On the city test, the BMW came up in the top two, alongside the Volvo, being comfortable and easy to live with, whilst the fuel consumption revealed that the fastest car is also the most economical, that being the 125i, of course, with an average fuel consumption of 7 l/100 km (33.6 mpg).

The track is where the BMW missed out on the two top positions but that can be relative, depending on who was driving and keeping in mind that it’s RWD and the track was wet.

In the end, the Bimmer was ranked second, behind the GTI but we could help but wonder what would’ve happened if the test was done with M135i and A45 AMG models. Either way, it’s an interesting video and you should watch it.
