In their bid to stay on top of the luxury car market BMW are rewriting the rules, adding up the numbers and coming up with new solutions.
The 3-Series is now bigger than ever before, and while the base car is still relatively affordable for what it offers, it’s still not enough to stave off new entry-level luxury sedans.
What are we talking about? Well, the new Audi A3 sedan and Mercedes CLA four-door coupe, both of which should launch soon. BMW is launching a preemptive strike with the smallest car it’s got.
According to Automotive News, BMW will launch a new entry-level sedan under the 1-Series name. This should be ready for the US market by 2015.
For now, the architecture will be rear-wheel drive, like the hatchback. But with the next generation 1-Series, arriving in about 8 years, this will become front-wheel drive.
