At the moment, despite trying to cover every possible niche, BMW hasn't got a proper competitor in the B-segment area, as it's supposed to. However, both the Bavarian manufacturer and its arch-rival, Mercedes-Benz, plan to change that.
The key seems to be the fore coming UKL platform that is rumored to be the foundation for up to 20 new models from both MINI and BMW. All of them will have certain features in common, like the front wheel drive and automatic transmissions.

However, excepting the features stated earlier, most of them will definitely be different from one another. Theophilus Chin did a very good rendering of how he thinks the future competitor for the A1 will look like.

His creation respects the BMW trademark features like the front kidney grilles and the Hofmeister kink and adds some new design cues like the elongated headlights with squared off LED corona lights and the strong character lines on the sides.

We actually like what he drew but, unfortunately, our most recent pictures show a different design for the future 1er, one that does not include the Hofmeister kink. Still, Daniel Mayerle, Creative Designer for BMW, said in a recent interview that a trademark feature like 'the kink' will not be lost on future models, even though they are front wheel drive.
