BMW 1 Series GT in the Works?

As we already told you, German manufacturer BMW is already developing the 2011 BMW 1 Series, a model year which will not be consisted only of the regular production versions. According to automobile-magazine.fr, a Gran Turismo 1 Series based vehicle is also in the works.

The 1 Series GT will join, as you might have guessed, the already infamous 5 Series GT to complete BMW's niche segment assault. But, even if no images of the 1 Series GT are yet available, it is unlikely it will look as..."different" as the 5 Series GT.

The source reports that the GT will be based on the five door 2011 1 Series, boasting a 5 cm longer wheelbase than the production versions of the 3 and 5 door 1 Series. Unique to the GT will be the front end and, to be reminiscent of the Gran Turismo design cue, will have an elevated driving position.

As for the engines, rumor goes the 1 Series GT will be powered by four-cylinder turbocharged engines, developing anywhere in between 204 and 240 horsepower. According to the aforementioned source, the 204 hp unit will be fitted on the 1 Series to carry the GT 123i name, while the most powerful unit will be the heart of the future GT 125i.

As we told you in the beginning, this is still in rumor stage. What is certain is that the German manufacturer is indeed looking at expanding its future range. For the 1 Series another rumor surfaced a while back, hinting that the company is working on a Surpersport version of the 1, to be placed somewhere in between the 135iS and the future M3.
