Blind Man Breaks Speed Record in Borrowed Lamborghini

This story goes to show just how much some people love cars and how they are able to go to any length to get that adrenaline rush of flooring the gas pedal in some exotic supercar. It's a story about resilience, about confidence, but most of all, shear guts.

What else would you call a blind man driving a fully-working Lamborghini down an airstrip at full speed? The man's name is Luc Costermans and he's from Belgium. He's been blind for 4 years now, but he was determined to break the Blind Speed Record, a fact which he managed to do on Saturday on a French airstrip in Istres.

Aided by copilot Guillaume Roman, who also deserves a big hand and a big pat on the back for having the guts to step inside a speeding vehicle with a blind man. The two managed to score a 192 mph speed out of a borrowed Lamborghini Galardo, and in doing so, break the existing Blind Speed Record held by Mike Newman.

The team were very happy at their achievement but know they got their work cut out for them. The aforementioned mike Newman is already set on breaking this freshly-laid record with an attempt to break the 200 mph barrier in a Keating TKR. Still, Luc was quoted as saying “I'm very, very happy. It's a team effort”

So right now it would be safe to assume it's not the guts these guys lack, but a faster car, the fastest, in order to settle things once and for all. And to make things complete, the visually-impaired but still very passionate driver, dedicated this victory to former F1 driver Phillipe Streiff, who was left as a tetraplegic after a tragic racing accident in 1989.

Luc Costermans was also blinded following an accident, but he isn't life get the better of him, as two years ago, he managed another magnificent feat, completing a tour of France in a light aeroplane, aided by just an instructor and a navigator.
