Black and White Are Most Popular Vehicle Colors

Are we living in a black and white world? At least this is what statistics show and when it comes to vehicle color trends DuPont is an authority in domain as they are the leading supplier of paint and coatings in more than 70 countries.

Extremes make the difference regarding color trends for vehicles. According to the 2008 DuPont Automotive Color Popularity Report, for the second year in a row, white is the most preferred vehicle color in North America. The color that symbolizes purity is surely among top preferences of consumers at a global level. Black and silver are also fashionable on some continents, while in the next years, it is expected an increasing demand for brilliant chromatic colors across global markets.

Color popularity is slightly differentiated depending on each region. Even if white is most favored in North America, there are signs that blue is becoming more and more popular among drivers, scoring 13 percent of the market. Moreover, blue has gained other markets as well, being placed on top five color choice in every market with the exception of Brazil.

Europeans seem to be dominated by some mystery traces or at least, this is what we might assume taking into consideration that the popularity of black vehicles in all segments is overwhelming. On the second place, scoring about 20 percent of the market, is silver, followed by gray at a difference of only two percent.  Although preferences for white/white pearl has increased to 10 percent, this color is not in the first three European choices.

However, in the next years, Europeans might be tempted to ask for more colorful vehicles:“Current preferences are strongly influenced by ecological concepts, with demand growing for light, pure and sophisticated looks and the strength of blue showing optimism for the future,” said Elke Dirks, DuPont color designer for Europe. “In the long term, we believe that European consumers will ask for a more colorful and individualistic palette from car makers.”

Asians tend to favor silver if we are to judge after countries such as China, South Korea, Japan and India. Russians like silver too but show a certain enthusiasm regarding more vivid colors such as red and blue.

Mexican and Brazilian share the color popularity with the American and the European, favoring white and black for their vehicles.

Overall, even if black and white seem to be the top choices among drivers, DuPont forecasts a “time for color” in the auto industry.
