Observe that blue-painted old-timer in the adjacent photo. Beautiful, isn’t it? Aside from its visual extravaganza, the Bizzarrini P538 pictured is chassis number B-P538-001, probably the purest racing creation of Giotto Bizzarrini.
Bizzarrini is the man behind the Ferrari 250 GTO, the most revered Prancing Horse of them all. To boot, he designed the original Lamborghini V12 engine, born in 1963 for the 350GTV prototype and phased out along with the Murcielago in 2010. Bizzarrini was awesome, make no mistake about that, and the Bizzarrini P538 is often regarded as his personal favorite creation.
After a painstaking nut-and-bolt restoration completed earlier this year, the owner of chassis no. B-P538-001 decided to part ways with his machine by offering it at auction for the first time in over two decades. When? August 13th. Where? RM Sotheby’s Monterey sale.
A genuine example of the breed authenticated by a marque expert isn’t a Bizzarrini you can find as easy as searching through the classifieds. An ideal machine for vintage racing and concours presentations, the P538 is animated by a 365 horsepower 5.4-liter Chevy fed by a quarter of Weber 45 DCOE carburetors. A five-speed manual made by ZF send the American grunt to the rear wheels, kept in check by a De Dion axle.
At the front, the P538 employs independent suspension with racing-licious double wishbones and an anti-roll bar. After a $250,000 restoration to period specification, this baby will fetch big bucks at auction. More so if you consider that at least two Bizzarrini P538 racers were built with the 327 Chevrolet V8 motor.
