Asia’s biggest auto show is reportedly threatened by the H7N9 bird flu, after Chinese authorities have reported 24 human infection cases and seven deaths in Shanghai and the city’s surrounding areas.
Although officials are claiming there’s no evidence of a deadly virus epidemic, many car enthusiasts and motoring journalists are considering skipping this year’s Shanghai Auto Show, the Chinese media reports. Considering the last event hosted in Shanghai, in 2011, gathered no less than 7 million visitors, bird flu fears are somewhat justified.

The last Shanghai Auto Show affected by an epidemic took place back in 2003, when the outbreak of the H5N1 bird flu forced organizers to shorten the event by three days.

The Chinese event will host several world automotive debuts, including those of the 2014 Maserati Ghibli, 2014 Porsche Panamera, BMW X4 Concept, while Ford is set to introduce a new concept and showcase no less than 23 vehicles.
